General Information
The Seminar of Slovene Language, Literature and Culture is a two-week course, which has been organised and held in the first half of July since 1965 by the Department of Slavonic Languages and Literature. It is aimed at foreign experts of Slavonic languages, Slovene in particular, university lecturers, scientists, students, translators, and cultural and educational officers from Slovene ethnic minority areas. Each year there are up to 130 participants from approximately 25 countries.
The course's objectives are to present the latest findings regarding the Slovene language, literature and culture, which are focussed every year on specially chosen themes, and also to deepen the participants' linguistic knowledge as well as their literary and cultural-historical understanding. Therefore the obligatory morning schedule of lectures, conversation classes and optional courses is accompanied by a rich afternoon-evening programme comprised of: Slovene film watching, theatre performances, museums, galleries and libraries, music and literary evenings, round tables, Ljubljana sight-seeing and all-day educational trips to various parts of Slovenia. The participants are also given the opportunity to prepare for, and sit if so desired, the examination in proficiency in the Slovene language, at either the basic or advanced level.
In its fourty-nine years The Seminar on Slovene Language, Literature and Culture has presented Slovenia to over one thousand foreigners. For many this stimulated them to continue their study of Slovene and broadened their authentic understanding of Slovenia.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, which funds the course, offers the majority of participants the possibility of grants - these are only granted in foreign countries through international contracts and agreements, directly to Slovene ethnic minority organisations or individually awarded by the seminar committee.
